Laminar jets can splash!
To investigate the importance of the jet shape on splashing, perturbations of known fre- quency or amplitude are imposed on the surface of a smooth laminar jet.
The photographs above illustrate the mechanism by which a steady vertical laminar jet (Djet = 6 mm, velocity Vjet= 303 cm/s) induces air entrainment as it translates horizon- tally over a quiescent pool (velocity Vt=44 cm/s from right to left).
